It can be argued that all music takes inspiration from some form. Whether it is from an existing piece of music, a loved one, a past experience or even a set of numbers, all music is imagined with external sources in mind. Even some of the most experimental music of it’s time take inspiration from various and sometimes surprising sources. With the experimental focus in mind, 'The Adventures Of Gamerboy' aims to take its inspiration from a source that has never been used before within the world of music.

The ‘Adventures of Gamerboy’ is a series of compositions using the physical act of playing video games as inspiration. The times of the buttons being pressed are recorded and it is this data that has been used to structure the pieces. It should be made clear that no aspects of the video game itself are used to create the music; it is the reactions of the subject playing the games that provided the inspiration behind the pieces.

Matt Taylor - Reinventing An Era EP

'Reinventing An Era' was my 'Portfolio Recording' assignment for my second year of University.

Above is the artwork (also created by myself) which was designed as a homage to the era the EP was inspired by.

The following paragraph is taken from the proposal document and explains my intentions for the recordings:

"My Portfolio will explore the style and techniques used when recording 1960s music and through each track, begin to alter the tracks with modern recording techniques which are now available to us. For example, whilst George Martin's use of analogue effects during the Beatles' Abbey Road sessions were at the time, considered ground breaking advances, by todays standards these sound effects would be far easier to recreate, even by an amateur producer. This is because of the invention of digital recording and the various plug-in and outboard effects which have been introduced since. It is my wish to record new versions of three tracks which I believe to show potential for reinterpretation."
